A new broadband superhighway that runs along the Dublin, Cork, Limerick motorways dissects Laois and runs right by Portlaoise.

The 2017 implementation report of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce says work has been completed on the installation of ducting / pipe on the M7 and M8 totalling about 90km on the route.

Laois County Council confirmed that that some of this ducting was laid in Laois. It also understands that local access will be possible.

A short section of the Kildare Town By-pass remains to be completed due to complications arising from the presence of a tanking membrane beneath the motorway. This will necessitate ducting being installed along the fence line. These works will be completed early this year 2018.

"The works in question will result in the creation of end to end duct connectivity between the cities of Cork and Limerick and the M7 at Naas," said the implementation plan published by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment.

The project was overseen by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. It is understood the project was future proofed to ensure local access.
