Driver caught speeding at almost 140km/h in Laois on national Slow Down Day

National Slow Down Day takes place between 7am on Friday and 7am on Saturday

A driver was caught speeding at 139km/h on the motorway in Laois during An Garda Siochana's Operation Slow Down Day.

The driver was driving at almost 20km/h over the 120km/h speed limit on the M7 motorway at Ballyadding, Ballybrittas, Co. Laois.

The slowdown operation commenced at 7:00am this morning, Friday, May 25 and will continue until 7:00am Saturday morning. Since 7:00am this morning, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe have checked the speed of 9,818 vehicles. Some 26 vehicles were detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

The aim of "Slow Down day” is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.

The objective is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on roads. The vast majority of drivers are safe and are complying with the speed limit, with a compliance rate of 99.7%.
