Man bitten and an attempted hit and run in Portlaoise fight

A drawn out "fight" took place in Portlaoise, Laois yesterday that involved a man being bitten, followed by an attempted hit and run.

The incident took place on the Mountrath Road at 5.30pm on Monday evening May 28.

Portlaoise Gardaí report that three men damaged a car belonging to another man aged in his early 20s,  whereupon a fight ensued.

"One male was bitten and received injuries to an ear," a Gardaí spokesperson said.

Following this as the three men walked away, was the attempted hit and run.

"A female acquaintance of the male injured, drove onto footpath and attempted to knock these three males down," the Gardaí said.

That woman, aged 22 to 23, has been arrested and is "detained for endangerment" and expected to appear in court today, Tuesday May 29.

It was described as "a tense situation".

A Garda helicopter was deployed in Portlaoise around the time of the incident which are understood to involved members families from the Travelling community.

Portlaoise Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses who saw the incident, which happened on the Mountrath Road and Abbeyleix Road in Portlaoise, between 5.30pm and 6pm, to contact them.
