Offaly TD Carol Nolan calls referendum celebrations 'shameful'

A likely candidate in Laois Offaly at the next General Election has  taken to social media to label the referendum celebrations at Dublin Castle over the weekend as "inappropriate" and "shameful."

Deputy Carol Nolan, who was suspended from her party, Sinn Féin, earlier this year after voting against legislation aimed at providing for a referendum on the Eighth Amendment, shared the above video originally posted by the 'Savethe8th' campaign.

The video shows the crowd at Dublin Castle cheering upon hearing the result that Ireland had voted by a margin of 66% to 34% in favour of repealing the 8th Amendment.

Health Minister Simon Harris is one of the individuals standing on stage in the video, taking the adulation of the crowd who were celebrating what they describe as a victory for women's rights, health and bodily autonomy.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald was present as was the deputy leader Michelle O'Neill.

Dep Nolan, who was a 'No' campaigner, said: "This celebration of referendum result to allow abortion into Ireland was inappropriate and shameful."

"I have spoken to a number of people in my constituency who voted yes and who feel ashamed over the behaviour of those at Dublin Castle, these constituents are of the opinion that it was wholly inappropriate," she added.

Offaly as a constituency voted 'Yes' in favour of repealing the 8th Amendment by margin of 58% to 42%. The government are now aiming to act on the referendum result and legislate for termination of pregnancy before the end of the year.

If she backs the legislation to facilitate abortion in Ireland, Dep Nolan is likely to be allowed to run in Laois Offaly for Sinn Féin alongside Laois Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley.
