Well known Laois priest to retire in Kildare & Leighlin Diocesan changes

A number of Diocesan appointments and changes have been announced for the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin.

The changes will see the retirement of Fr. Frank McNamara PE CC in Mountmellick. Fr McNamara has served in Mountmellick for the best part of three decades. He retired as Parish Priest in 2012.

The appointments will also see the Parish Priest of Ballyfin, Fr Pat Hennessy move to Leighlin where he will be PP. He will be replaced by Fr. Joe Brophy, currently curate in Mountrath, who will taken on duties as PP of Ballyfin and Mountrath. Fr P.J. Fitzgerald SPS will be curate in Mountrath.

Fr. Gerard Breen PP Balyna will become the PP of Stradbally, while the current PP, Fr. Sean Maher will join the Naas/Sallins/Two-Mile-House team.

The new appointments are all to come into effect on August 1st.

Announcing the changes, Bishop Denis Nulty said, "I want to thank all the priests who very constructively engaged with me in the process of appointments in recent weeks. This positive engagement is not something taken for granted, but is deeply appreciated. Changing an appointment in a priest’s life is neither easy on the priest or the lay people and religious he has worked with. This year’s appointments are being announced in this first week of June, allowing the priests the months of June and July to make preparations for their new appointment.

"I want to sincerely thank Fr. Tom Lalor and Fr. Frank McNamara who are retiring after many years of service to the diocese. I want to thank those taking up new appointments and to assure them of every support and prayer in these weeks of transition."
