Irish Water working to restore water supply after pipe bursts in Tipperary town

Crews have been on the ground since this morning

Old cast iron water mains prone to frequent bursts will be replaced in rural Laois over the coming weeks.

The work will improve the supply of water for the local community, homes and businesses in Ballylynan, Co Laois. The replacement is part of the Irish Water Leakage Reduction Programme.

The work will involve the replacement of approximately 1400 metres of aged cast iron and problematic water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.

The work will start this week and are expected to be completed in by January 2019.

Once complete, the benefits of the project will include a more reliable water supply for all customers. This means reduced leakage on the network which will improve water pressure to homes and businesses. Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of the improvement works.

Irish Water has planned the works in short sections in order to limit the impact on customers. Work may involve some short-term water shut-offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs.

Traffic management will be in place during sections of the works, including three local road closures:

On the Carlow Road, from the junction with N78 to the junction with Whitethorn Grove
From Shadeoge crossroads to the Carlow Road junction
From Shadeoge crossroads along the L7981 to the entrance of the Waste Water Treatment Plant

Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

An Irish Water spokesperson said this will be a long-term solution.

"The replacement of these ageing water mains in Ballylynan will improve the security of supply for local residents and businesses alike. Replacing the existing water mains with new modern pipes will provide a long-term solution to ensure a safe and secure water supply is delivered to customers. Irish Water understands this type of work can be inconvenient and will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause."
