Fianna Fáil has selected a Portlaoise-based Laois County Councillor to contest the next General Election.

Cllr Pauline Madigan confirmed to the Leinster Express that the party's HQ confirmed her candidacy on Thursday night, December 7.

The Portlaoise Municipal District councillor joins Deputy Sean Fleming on the Laois side of the re-united Laois Offaly five-seat constituency.

It is understood that Peter Ormond has been added to the party's ticket in Offaly where Deputy Barry Cowen was selected at the Offaly convention.

The party is aiming to win the three seats in the constituency which will see at least one of the six sitting TDs lose out due to the scrapping of the two three seaters.

Cllr Madigan, a lecturer in IT Carlow, was recently added to the Portlaoise list of candidates to contest the local elections in May 2019.
