Drugs worth over €80,000 seized at Portlaoise in parcels from Kenya and Thailand

Revenue officers at Portlaoise Mail Centre seized drugs worth over €80,000 at Portlaoise Mail Centre on Monday.

Almost 4kgs of herbal cannabis and 10.1kgs of khat with a combined estimated street value of €83,050 were seized. Khat is a stimulant 'upper' drug with similar effects to amphetamine.

The illegal drugs were discovered following routine profiling, with the assistance of Revenue detector dog Sam, pictured below.

The drugs were concealed in two separate parcels from Kenya and Thailand and were destined for addresses in Dublin City Centre. One parcel was labelled as ‘clothing’ and the other as a ‘wedding gift’.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.

These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting drug importations.

If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding drug smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295.
