"The last week has been a difficult one" - Gardaí and family thank people for searching for tragic kayaker

Dozens of volunteers were involved in searching for the late Declan Reid

Gardaí have thanked rescue teams and volunteers who participated in the search for a dad who died tragically on the River Barrow on what should have been a fun day of kayaking with his young son.

Declan Reid, 34, who will be laid to rest this week, was kayaking with his eight-year-old son Aaron on Sunday, February 28 when their kayak capsized near Ardleigh Lock on the Barrow on the Laois Kildare border near Athy.

The boy was rescued from the water by a passerby who spotted them in trouble.

A search for Declan was carried out by garda divers who were later joined by local gardaí and over 80 members of the Civil Defence from Kildare, Laois, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford.

Search and rescue teams from Meath, Mallow, and Dublin were also involved in the search operation along with local kayakers.

Mr Reid, late of Moorefield Drive, Neilstown, Clondalkin is predeceased by his mother Patricia.

The Laois Offaly Kildare Division Gardaí paid tribute to all who helped with the search.

Mr Reid, of Neilstown, Clondalkin in Dublin, will be sadly missed by his son Aaron, his partner Fiona, his father Paul, sister Roisin and extended family, neighbours and friends.
