The Oscar winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis returned with his family to his Laois roots in March 2007 to unveil the plaque to mark the opening of the Durrow Famine and Emigrant Wall in March 2007. The actor's father was born in Ballintubbert House near Stradbally. The comedian Des Bishop performed at The Heritage hotel Portlaoise in the same month.
