'Deer drivers' - Laois gardaí warn of animals on local roads

Laois Gardai are warning people to watch out for deer on the roads.

They issued an alert after a member of the public contacted them after spotting deer crossing the road near Abbeyleix.

“A page follower has reported deer crossing near the flashing "Go Slow" sign on the approach to Abbeyleix from Durrow this evening. This serves as an important reminder that deer movement increases at this time of year, particularly during dawn and dusk.

How to Stay Safe:

✅ Reduce Speed in known deer crossing areas, especially where signs are in place.

✅ Be Extra Vigilant during early morning and late evening when deer are most active.

✅ Use Full Beams Where Safe to spot deer eyes reflecting light, but dip them if a deer is ahead to avoid startling them.

✅ Remember, They Move in Groups – If one crosses, more may follow.

If you encounter deer on the road, slow down but avoid swerving, as this can lead to more serious accidents.

Thanks to the follower for the alert – please drive safely and share to spread awareness!”, gardaí said.
