A total of 137 new poles and 244 new road signs were installed in the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District in advance of the recent speed limit changes.

It is just one of three municipal districts in Laois where new signage and poles were required ahead of the speed limit reduction from 80kph to 60kph on some rural roads on February 7, 2025.

Details of the signage were outlined by Laois County Council Senior Executive Engineer Philip McVeigh at the monthly meeting of Porarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.

He said “all new poles and signs were installed across the Municipal District for the new speed limit changes on local roads - in advance of the 7th February deadline for the change in speed limits. (137 new poles and 244 new signs).”

Independent Cllr Aisling Moran noted that Portarlington Graiguecullen must have been one of the best prepared districts in the country. She said she wasn’t sure about the effectiveness of the new limits, which dropped in some rural roads from 80kph to 60kph, but she commended the staff on their work.
