Laois Offaly Gardaí detect jeep towing trailer at 132kph

The maximum speed limit for trailer towing is 80kph

Laois Offaly Gardai detected a driver towing a trailer at 132 kph on Thursday.

Gardaí said the maximum speed to tow a trailer is 80kph, some 52kph lower than the speed detected.

“Offaly Roads Policing detected a jeep towing a trailer travelling at 132km/h. When towing a trailer, the maximum legal speed limit is 80km/h – regardless of whether it is on a motorway, national or regional road.

Travelling in excess of this limit while towing greatly increases stopping distances and the risk of trailer sway, putting all road users in danger,” they stated.

Gardai said the driver will now face prosecution and they urged road users to always ensure trailers are roadworthy, obey speed limits and driver in accordance with road conditions.
