A crash barrier is needed on a section of local Laois road where a tractor crashed and turned over, according to a Laois councillor.

Independent Cllr Aisling Moran tabled a motion at a recent meeting asking Laois County Council to install a crash/safety barrier on the L-7890 Ballynakill road, where stream has eroded bank close to the road edge.

Cllr Moran said she had raised the matter with the Council on a previous occasion. She said it was a narrow road and drivers "can’t see that there is a dyke”.

“A tractor went into it one of the days, and it turned over,” she said at the meeting in County Hall, Portlaoise.

Cllr Moran added that the barrier doesn’t need to cover a large distance but it was need in the interest of safety.

Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan, replied in writing.

“Laois County Council will carry out an assessment and if warranted, will consider this for Climate Adaptation and Resilience works application in 2026. Any measures required to ensure road safety at this section of road in the interim will be considered,” said Mr Drennan.
