Emo’s Ava O’Connor will fly the flag for Laois and Ireland at the upcoming European U23 Athletics Championships after earning selection for both the 3,000 metres steeplechase and the 1,500 metres.

O’Connor, who is a member of the Tullamore Harriers club, has made a name for herself on the US collegiate scene in recent seasons, and her inclusion in two events is no surprise given her blistering form.

Now based at Adams State University in Colorado on an athletics scholarship, the Laois athlete recently made headlines by claiming her first NCAA title with a stunning win in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Division 2 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also smashed her own Irish U23 record in the same event, clocking an eye-catching 9:45, further underlining her potential on the European stage.
