IN PICTURES: Laois athletics club hosts the first round of the Laois Cross Country Championships

The Laois Cross-Country season got underway on Sunday, September 28, as St Abban’s A.C, hosted on land kindly provided by Ian McDonald, the same grounds that held National Intermediate and Senior Cross Country events in the early 1980s. The day featured 12 races across age groups, beginning with an open race for young athletes. St Abban’s were dominant on home turf, claiming multiple team golds. U10: Boys & Girls – gold and silver, U12: Girls – gold & bronze; Boys – gold & silver, U14: Girls – gold & bronze; Boys – gold & silver, U16 Girls: St Michael’s took gold in a tight battle, with St Abban’s second, U18 & Novice: St Abban’s won the girls U18/Novice ladies races; boys U18 went to St Abban’s, while Novice men were narrowly won by Oughaval. St Abban’s athletes, coaches, parents, and volunteers were all praised for making the event a success, with special thanks to Ben and his team for preparing the course. Sponsors for the day included Ger Kelly Plumbing, 50 Shades Hair Salon, and Danny Bolton. Day 2 of the Laois Cross Country Championships will take place in Cappakeel, Emo, on Sunday, October 12.
