The Juvenile Development Races were designed for athletes who have not previously medalled individually at Day 1 or Day 2 of the Laois Cross Country Championships, offering a valuable opportunity for emerging runners to gain race experience and challenge for podium finishes. Many St Abban’s athletes took full advantage of that opportunity, producing excellent performances throughout the day.

In the Junior Men’s race, which was held alongside the Masters event, Will Duffy impressed with a commanding display. Leading from the early stages, he maintained his form throughout the 6km course to take a deserved victory.

The Masters Men’s event saw another St Abban’s success, with Colin Coyne claiming first place overall. Coyne showed remarkable recovery and determination just a week after competing in the Dublin Marathon. Tom Kenny also delivered a fine run to finish second overall, while the club’s strong depth ensured St Abban’s secured both the O35 and O45 team titles.

The women’s races also brought plenty of medals back to the club. Mary Doyle led the St Abban’s contingent home in second place overall, closely followed by Sinead Kelly in third. Together with Deirdre Delaney, they combined to capture gold in the O35 team category.

There was further success in the O45 women’s event, where Caitriona McDonald finished second overall, supported by Karen Kavanagh and Carmel Byrne. Their efforts earned another set of gold medals for St Abban’s in the team standings.

It was a rewarding day for the club, with numerous strong performances across all age groups. Many of these athletes will now turn their attention to next weekend’s Leinster Cross Country Championships at Kilbeggan Racecourse.

A word of thanks was extended to St Michael’s AC, who hosted Sunday’s event and ensured everything ran smoothly. The final fixture of the Laois Cross Country calendar, the Senior Championships, will take place on November 30, hosted by Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC.
