Laois Hockey Club invites new players to join exciting 2025/26 season

The 2025/26 season is in full swing at Laois Hockey Club, with players of all ages from across the county representing the club in competitive matches each weekend.

The club is now looking to welcome new members, whether you are a former player eager to pick up your hockey stick again or someone who has never played the sport before. All are welcome to join the club and become part of its friendly and inclusive environment.

Laois Hockey Club currently fields two ladies’ teams competing in Leinster Hockey leagues, in divisions 5 and 10. Training for the ladies’ second team takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7–8pm in Abbeyleix, followed by the first team from 8–9pm. Saturday matches provide competitive action for players aged 15 and up.

The club’s men’s team, launched last season, is a welcome addition. While not yet competing in a league, the team trains every Thursday night in Abbeyleix and participates in non-competitive matches throughout the season. Plans are underway to enter the team into a competitive league next year as it continues to develop. Men’s team players also start from 15 years of age.

Laois Hockey Club boasts a very active youth section, welcoming players from senior infants up to transition year. Training takes place every Sunday morning at two locations in Abbeyleix and the Holy Family School in Portlaoise.

Boys and girls from senior infants to second class train once a week. Third- and fourth-class players train on Sundays and take part in West Leinster blitzes. From fifth class upwards, boys and girls play in separate competitive competitions.

Those interested in joining the club or trying out the sport can contact Susan Fingleton at 087 950 3651 or Jonathan Walshe at 086 816 7044. The club also shares weekly fixtures, updates, and fundraising events on social media: Instagram: Laoishockey and Facebook: Laois Hockey.

Whether you are new to hockey or returning after a break, Laois Hockey Club encourages all ages and abilities to give the sport a try.
