Athlone became the focal point of Irish juvenile athletics last weekend as the National Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Championships delivered two thrilling days of high-quality competition. St Abban’s Athletics Club was one of the standout clubs, with athletes winning medals, achieving personal bests, and delivering strong performances across many events. Leading the charge was Penelope McMahon, who delivered a superb performance to secure national gold in the Girls U13 60m Hurdles. After confidently progressing through her heat in 9.89 seconds, McMahon raised her level in the final to clock an outstanding 9.72 seconds and claim the title. Demonstrating her versatility, she also competed strongly in the Girls U13 600m earlier in the day, finishing 5th in a competitive 1:47.30.
Day One saw further success for the club, highlighted by Ava Brophy’s silver medal performance in the Girls U12 600m. Brophy ran an excellent race to finish in 1:48.22 and secure her place on the podium. The club’s middle-distance strength was also evident in the Girls U15 800m, where Sinéad Fitzpatrick produced a fine run to take silver in 2:18.20. Additional top-ten finishes came from Bailee Bolton (8th, Girls U14 800m, 2:23.92) and Annabelle Lawlor (8th, Girls U19 800m, 2:23.89).
In the sprint hurdles, strong showings came from Roisin Kearney, who placed 4th in the Girls U14 60m Hurdles in 9.57 seconds, and Zoe Dunne, who also finished 4th in the Girls U16 event in 9.49 seconds after impressive qualification rounds.
Field events provided further encouragement, with Leo Smith narrowly missing out on a medal in the Boys U13 Shot Putt, finishing 4th with a throw of 10.73m. Kate Kelly placed 12th in the same age group with 7.96m, while Elanna Kelly cleared 1.40m in the Girls U17 High Jump to finish 10th.
Momentum carried into Day Two, where St Abban’s athletes added four more medals to their tally. Ava Brophy claimed her second silver of the championships with a strong performance in the Girls U12 Long Jump, recording a best leap of 4.40m. In the Girls U15 Long Jump, Faye Brennan secured bronze with 4.70m, while Lily O’Neill also took bronze in the Girls U16 event with a jump of 4.98m. Elaine Miller rounded off the medal haul with bronze in the Girls U19 Triple Jump, producing a best effort of 10.59m.
On the track, Brennan impressed again in the Girls U15 60m, progressing from her heat in 8.26 seconds before finishing 4th in the final in 8.14 seconds. O’Neill showed her sprinting strength by winning her heat in the Girls U16 60m in 7.85 seconds and later placing 5th in the final. Other notable performances included James Hyland, who finished 4th in his heat of the Boys U19 400m in 52.49 seconds, and Rachel Harnett, who competed strongly in the Girls U19 60m.
Additional field event results included Zoe Dunne finishing 7th in the Girls U16 Long Jump (4.80m), Robyn Fitzmaurice placing 9th in the Girls U16 Triple Jump (8.69m), and Oran McCarthy finishing 8th in the Boys U14 Shot Putt with 9.31m.
