PICTURES: Laois students make their robotic inventions come alive!

Local students took part in the Midlands Vex IQ Robotics Competition, with some now award winning inventors!

Laois County Council hosted its first Midlands Vex IQ Robotics Competition in Emo National school on Wednesday, March 6. 

With six schools and 10 teams, there were almost 100 children taking part in over 50 games on the day. Among the six schools who took part on the day were Emo, Camross, Gaelscoil Shli Dala Ballaghmore, Paddock, Scoil Eoin Phoil Naofa Ballyroan and Cloneyhurk.

Fifth and sixth class students showcased their robot builds, their individual driving skills, team driving skills and their coding programs.

Winners were:

TEAMWORK  AWARD: Paddock and Scoil Eoin Phoil Naofa Ballyroan, Team 2.

SKILLS  AWARD: Scoil Eoin Phoil Naofa Ballyroan, Team 2.

DESIGN AWARD: Emo NS, Team 1.

JUDGES AWARD : Camross NS.

EXCELLENCE AWARD: Scoil Eoin Phoil Naofa Ballyroan, Team 2.

Organiser and coordinator of the event, Antoinette Brennan of Laois County Council said: “It gives the students the opportunity to work in teams, improve their communication skills and proudly represent their schools.

“It is hoped that this education at an early stage will help students into a career of computer science, math and science, with a future to work in the Midland region.”

The next Midland Competitions will be held in Tullamore on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21, with a third date in April to be confirmed.
