Mr Whelan was one of 16 volunteers nominated for the award in 2023, which was presented to him by Laois County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Paschal McEvoy.
The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge groups and individuals who, through their commitment to voluntary and community activities, have played a significant role, in enhancing the quality of life in their communities.
Pat became a wheelchair user as a result of an incident in 2015, and began volunteering with the Irish Wheelchair Association day service in Portlaoise.
He has held fundraisers to support outings for service users, volunteers on a number of committees in the county council and also with Laois Sports Partnership, and supports people with disabilities on a daily basis and never says no to helping anyone or indeed any organisations.
The Unsung Hero Award is one of many awards available through Laois Community and Voluntary Awards.
You can nominate a group/individual through an online application form here.
Applications close on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 4.00pm.
