Borris Innovation Centre held their Annual Garden Party on Sunday, August 25 in the beautiful gardens of the old Convent now called Borris Innovation Centre.

Despite the weather, a large number of people turned out to enjoy the local musicians/bands and social occasion.

There was something for everyone to enjoy on the day including music, the game of skittles, a disco, stalls from the local community, bouncy castles and a visit by ‘BK Bob’ the mascot from Borris-in-Ossory Kilcotton GAA Club who entertained the children.

The Centre continues to go from ‘strength to strength’ and is continuing to serve the community and wider community just like it did since 1873.  Its superb location beside St. Canice’s Church, St. Joseph’s National School and the new playground makes it a perfect location and hub for the village.

History of the Convent

In 1873, a community of Sisters of Mercy from Alton Towers, in Manchester were invited to take up residence in Borris-in-Ossory and established a primary school for the education of girls in the area.

A legacy of education by the Sisters of Mercy which began at the Convent in Borris-in-Ossory in February 1873 has continued into the 21st century, over one hundred and fifty years later. While the centre remained vacant for many years it is great to see it back to life again.

The Centre has developed year on year since the committee first met in 2018 to develop the old Convent into an Innovation Centre for the Community.

The Board states,

“We are fortunate to have such a wonderful centre in the middle of our village which has so much to offer the Borris-in-Ossory Community and indeed the wider Community.

“The Annual Garden Party was a great success again this year and we are delighted that so many people turned out to support us. We will continue to develop the centre in the months and years ahead and look forward to working on the projects planned.

“Along with the many classes taking place in the Centre, we are delighted to facilitate Gaelscoil Shlí Dála Ballaghmore in the Centre pending the building of their new School in Ballaghmore Village.  Our classes will resume again in September and the Centre will be available to the Community and wider Community for meetings, fundraisers and gatherings”.
