There was joy and delight on the maternity ward in the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise as the first babies of the new year were born. Photographer Denis Byrne went along for the Leinster Express/Laois Live and captured the beautiful scenes at the hospital. Amanda Byrne and Adam Coss were over the moon with the arrival of baby Eli born at 12:18 weighing 9.01 Ibs.

Ciaran Byrne and Sharon Roche had to wait a bit longer and their bundle of joy, a baby boy weighing 8lbs 10oz, was born at 22:27pm on January 1.
