The anniversary drew huge crowds, with locals and visitors gathering to honour a business that has been part of Abbeyleix life since 1775. The celebrations also featured the official launch of Abbeyleix Celebrates 250, a new book by local historian Noel Burke with photography by James G Carroll, charting the town’s remarkable history.
The pub has been at the heart of Abbeyleix since the early days of the De Vesci estate town. What began as a thatched cottage built by the Morrissey family in 1775 has grown into one of Ireland’s most recognisable heritage pubs, famous for its biscuit tins, sweet jars, vintage scales, Titanic links, and the much-loved pot stove that has warmed generations.

The landmark has seen centuries of change, guided by local figures like Willie Joe Morrissey, Joe Mulhall and Paddy Mulhall, and Tom Lennon, before entering a new era under current owner Dan Tynan. Former manager John Nolan, who retired recently after a combined 32-year stint, returned to help MC the festivities, while new general manager Pauline Coughlan, alongside Mark Deegan and Orla Maher, and the team organised a packed day of events.
