The oldest men's shed group in Laois is to continue to remain based in a former fire station.
Portarlington Men's Shed has renewed its lease for the station, with Laois County Council.
Cllr Aidan Mullins proposed the approval of the lease, at a recent monthly council meeting. He was seconded by Cllr Aisling Moran.
The branch of the men's shed formed over 12 years ago in May 2012, initially in a business premises in Botley Lane, then in the enterprise centre, supported by Port Vision.
It was followed by many others forming across Laois, with women's sheds now recently forming county wide also, supported by Laois Partnership Company.
The aim of them is to provide a social outlet for people who are retired or not working, as well as place to gather and work on hobbbies and projects.
Val Kennedy from the Portarlington Men's Shed recently spoke to the Leinster Express / Laois Live after new funding was announced.
"We have a lovely group of people here and are always open to new people. It's a happy little family, as we call it," he said.
The lease is for a period of four years and eleven months, for the nominal fee of €1 per year.
The old fire station is on the Portlaoise Road at the Foxcroft Street junction near SuperValu.
