Breaking: New Laois bus route announced to replace discontinued service

The NTA has announced that there is a 'Public Service Obligation' for a bus corridor from Portarlington to Kildare

Breaking: New Laois bus route announced to replace discontinued service

A spokesperson for the National Transport Authority has announced that the former Dublin Coach 816 route from Portarlington to Kildare Village is to be replaced with a new service from Portarlington to Monasterevin.

Following the decision of Dublin Coach to withdraw route 816 from service, the NTA has assessed this route corridor to determine whether a Public Service Obligation (PSO) now exists.

"Our assessment has concluded that a Public Service Obligation does exist," a spokesperson for the NTA confirmed to the Leinster Express/Laois Live.

"As such, the NTA is now working on proposals to provide bus services between Portarlington and Monasterevin. The route number for this service will be route 806."

The Big Green Bus, operated by Dublin Coach, provided 16 services from Monday to Sunday.

Dublin Coach announced that the route was  "uneconomic to operate," and removed it from service on November 30 due to declining passenger numbers.

A Portarlington carpooling group has since been established for local commuters to travel to Kildare Village.

Portarlington mother Ms Jenny Murphy has established a public Facebook group on December 2, and has already received over 80 members.

“Two of my adult children use the route, and my son's partner,” Ms Murphy explained.

“They all work in either the village or Kildare town. People are annoyed as the reason Dublin coach gave was declining passenger numbers,” she said.

“However, people were regularly left standing in Kildare due to the bus being full.“

More details regarding this new bus service will be announced shortly, with further updates to come.
