Meeting hears of speeding at Laois roundabout which can be crossed without steering

A council meeting heard a call for improved safety at a Laois roundabout that can be driven through without steering.

Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins tabled a motion in relation to the roundabout at the latest monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.

He asked “that Laois County Council give an update on plans to improve safety at the roundabout on Ballymorris Road in Portarlington as discussed previously.”

Cllr Mullins said “I think this is my third notice of motion on this.”

He said “I think we have four roundabouts in the whole of Portlarlington. You have about 100 in Portlaoise.”

Cllr Mullins explained that he had previously been told a topographical survey was being carried out and a safety solution design was being prepared. He insisted the roundabout needed improvement due to its current design.

“You can drive straight through and not have to deviate from your path,” he explained.

Cllr Mullins said a traffic survey had revealed excessive speeds on the Ballymorris Road.

In a written response, a Road Design Executive Engineer stated that: “Road Design will contact Cllr Aidan Mullins and arrange a site meeting at the proposed location. All proposed safety measures will be assessed with a view to taking the necessary actions required.”
