Signage need to stop cars driving out into traffic in Laois town

'A lady was knocked off her bicycle some time ago,' a Councillor explained

Signage need to stop cars driving out into traffic in Laois town

Foxcroft Street in Portarlington is partially one way

A meeting was told many motorists drive out into oncoming traffic in the mistaken belief that a road in Portarlington is one way.

Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins tabled a motion calling for action by the Council.

He asked “that Laois County Council install additional signage on the link road approaching Foxcroft Street in Portarlington in the interest of safety. Many motorists believe Foxcroft Street is one way and drive out into traffic coming from the left hand side.”

In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan, said “Laois County Council will review existing arrangements and will consider providing additional signage to want and advise motorists of its traffic movements and existing priorities.”

Cllr Mullins said the street was one way for about 100 metres. He said there had been a few near misses in recent times. “A lady was knocked off her bicycle some time ago,” he added.

Independent Cllr Aisling Moran seconded the motion at the latest monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
