A residential laneway near Portarlington Train Station needs to be taken in charge by Laois County Council, a local councillor has argued.
Speaking at the recent meeting of the Graiguecullen / Portarlington MD, Cllr Aidan Mullins called on the council to begin the process of taking Railway Lane, or Railway Cottages as it also known, in charge.
There are between seven and eight private dwellings on the cul-de-sac which is located near the train station in Portarlington.
Cllr Mullins explained that he believes there are grounds for this laneway to be taken in charge. Firstly, due to issues with public lighting on the laneway. And secondly, due to the need for road repairs and resurfacing on it.

The Independent councillor said that he is unaware of the council's assessment criteria for taking a road in charge.

However, he told the council: "In this particular instance, I'd be very surprised if they didn't think it should be taken in charge."
Senior Executive Engineer with Laois County Council, Tom Drennan, said the council will arrange to meet with Cllr Mullins in order to properly identify the road in question and its extents.
An assessment will then be carried out to determine the road's eligibility to be taken in charge in accordance with Laois County Council's taking in charge assessment criteria procedures.
