Large Laois primary school applies for prefabs to cope with 'excess numbers'

A Laois school board intends to apply for planning permission for new prefab classrooms to deal with excess numbers at the school.

The Board of Management at Presentation Primary School, Portarlington has applied for single storey temporary accomodation structure with two classrooms and ancillary accommodation including all associated site works at the school on Station Road, Portarlington.

School Principal, Cathal Ruane, said the need for the extra two temporary prefab classrooms is due to excess numbers of pupils in the school.

“It has leveled off, this is the maximum number now that we will have,” he said.

The prefabs are ‘realistically’ expected to be installed and in use by late September this year for the large classes of junior infants starting in the school.

It is hoped that the additional prefabs will increase the teacher allocations which are approved annually in accordance with established rules based on recognised pupil enrolment.

In 2009 the Presentation Primary girls school got a brand new building.

In September, 2017 the school finished a brand new physical activity playground, an all weather 220m running track, and a playing pitch.

The work is all to boost physical activity at the girls school, which has 750 pupils.

CCTV footage shows Laois business targeted in burglary for the second time.
