The 4th Laois Portarlington Scout Group has kicked off its annual food drive fundraiser to help people in need in the run up to Christmas.
All of the youth members of the scouts are running a non-perishable food drive for the month of November after they received huge local support for last year's collection.
This means they have started a collection that anyone in the town can donate to by dropping off non-perishable foods like cereals, grains, pasta, drinks, biscuits, soup, canned food, preserves etc.
In the first week of December, the food will be donated to the Portarlington Lions Club who make hampers and give them to local families in need coming up to Christmas.
Sylvia Horan is the Venture Section Leader at the 4th Laois Portarlington Scout Group.
She said the huge local support last year has encouraged them to run the food drive again this year.
“A notice has gone out with all youth members and on our Facebook page, anybody around town can help us by dropping non-perishable foods to the den.
“We started the food drive last year and we did it for PATH Portlaoise Action to Homelessness which was a great success and this year we wanted to do it again for a local cause.
“We picked the Lions Club, we work with them during the year putting up tents on their fun day.
“Everybody responds so well to charity and it teaches the children about giving and charity too.
“Last year we brought in a member of the organisation to speak to the group about what they do and we plan to do that again this year with a member of the Lions Club,” she said.
The scout's den is located off the Main Street, Portarlington and is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Anyone who wants more information on how or when they to drop off food can contact the ‘4th Laois Scouts Portarlington’ directly on Facebook.
