People using quads and motorbikes have been asked to stay away from Derryounce Lakes and Trails in Portarlington as they are tearing up the roads which are being upgraded.

There has been a number of occasions where people have gone out into the Derryounce walking trails on quad bikes and motorbikes in recent weeks ruining the grounds and causing unwanted noise in the area.

Cllr Aidan Mullins has said the use of these bikes is prohibited and not included in the lease on the land.

“We have restricted access at as many points as possible but there are still a few where people on quads get access and they are damaging the ground and the committee would find it hard to have a full-time presence which makes it very difficult to police.

“Bikes and quads are not allowed under the lease with Coillte and they also bring unwanted noise.

“We have put in an application for a large, substantial grant and we are waiting to get word on that. If a grant comes through we would be able to upgrade more of it,” he said.

Cllr Mullins said the use of quads and motorbikes is not what Derryounce is being upgraded for and does not work well with its intended use as a peaceful place.

The committee has shared messages on social media to remind people that the use of quads and motorbikes is prohibited at Derryounce.
