Excitement is on a high for the boys of St Patrick's boys NS in Portarlington who now have the official date for their moving day to their new Laois school.
Their bright spacious new school on Canal Road is completed and the school has announced the date for moving as Tuesday May 7.
The 24 classroom school will be big enough for 700 pupils, including the junior and senior infant boys which are currently taught in the Presentation Primary school.
St Patrick's has long outgrown its existing school on Patrick Street. Classes spilled over into the old girls school down the street some years ago to contain the growing numbers.
"It has been a massive 20 year wait," principal Pat Galvin said.
The whole community is invited to come and visit the new school on Canal Road once the 441 boys and 38 staff are settled in.
Meanwhile fundraisers are coming thick and fast to pay for a new all weather floodlit sports facility at the new school.
Last week the boys and staff held a carwash day outside their old school on Patrick Street.
The local community supported it hugely, and the boys got busy scrubbing, raising an impressive €920.
Their biggest fundraiser is just around the corner and it promises a night for the entire community to enjoy.
A Lip Sync Battles night takes place on Saturday May 5 at the Heritage hotel in Killenard. The contestants include principal Pat Galvin and lots of people from the local community. They will be lip synching and dancing for all their worth on stage, all to raise money towards the €145,000 cost of the sports facility.
Tickets are on sale for €20 from the school office.
