Road safety measures agreed for Portlaoise estate

New hope for deep retrofits of older Portlaoise council estates

A new ramp is to be installed at St Brigid’s estate in Portlaoise where work will also take place on signage.

Cllr Dwane Stanley raised concerns about road safety at the estate in the latest Portlaoise Municipal District meeting.

The Sinn Fein Councillor asked: "That this Council install a raised table at the middle junction in St Brigid's Place and give an update as to when the ramp at the front of the estate will be installed." The motion was seconded by Cllr Willie Aird.

In response, Laois Senior Executive Engineer, Wes Wilkinson said: “A traffic calming ramp will be installed in the vicinity of number 1 St Brigid's Place in the coming weeks.  The Portlaoise Municipal District Office will liaise with the Road Design Section regarding an appropriate traffic control/calming solution at the junction in the vicinity of number 45 and Number 29,  St Brigid's Place.”

Cllr Dwane Stanley said there is an issue around speeding in the area, particularly from the railway side.  She said the money for the ramp at number one will come from the discretionary fund.

“In the middle of the estate right up at the four junctions we have four stop signs and I have witnessed myself cars driving right through completely, going up the hill and coming down the hill from the estate and it’s a very big junction. One ramp is not going to do anything there. It is a raised table lamp that is needed there. I am asking Laois County Council, the roads department, to step up to the mark,” said Cllr Dwane Stanley.

She said it was a very busy area with many residents and the leisure centre. It’s also the main junction in the estate, she pointed out.

Mr Wilkinson said the ramp would be installed in the coming weeks. In relation to the junction at the four way crossroads, he suggested as an interim measure the council could carry out work to highlight the stop signs.

Cllr Dwane Stanley said she would welcome any measures to highlight the junction but she still believed a raised table was needed at the junction.
