Lily's Portlaoise
One of Portlaoise's biggest and best-known pubs has confirmed that it has been forced to shut due to financial constraints that at statement says made trading untenable.
A statement from Lilly's Bar & Kitchen on Tuesday, February 27 officially announced that the pub to close for good.
"After nearly six remarkable years, Lilly's Bar & Kitchen announces the unfortunate but necessary decision to cease operations. The journey on Main Street has been filled with cherished memories, warm camaraderie, and a unique community spirit.
"Despite our deep connection with the Portlaoise community, the decision to close Lilly's stems from the challenging economic landscape, marked by escalating costs across various facets of our business. Regrettably, these financial constraints have made it untenable for us to continue providing the vibrant atmosphere our patrons have come to love.
"Lilly's would like to express heartfelt gratitude to our loyal customers, dedicated staff, supportive landlord, reliable suppliers, and skilled tradesmen. Your unwavering support has been the cornerstone of our success, and we are immensely thankful for the memorable experiences shared within these walls.
"A special acknowledgment goes to Downtown Portlaoise and Portlaoise Tidy Towns for their commendable efforts in enhancing the local business environment. Their hard work has contributed to making Portlaoise a more vibrant and appealing place to conduct business.
"As Lilly's Bar & Kitchen bids farewell, we extend our best wishes to our neighboring businesses on Main Street. We encourage everyone to continue supporting local establishments, fostering the unique charm that independent businesses bring to our community.
"While the doors of Lilly's may be closing, the memories created and the friendships formed will forever remain a cherished part of our legacy.
"Thank you for an incredible six years," concluded the statement.
The statement did not comment on cancellations that may have been caused by the sudden closure or any deposits that might have to be repaid.
Proprietor Kieran Lillis confirmed to the Leinster Express /Laois Live that all bookings that had given deposits to secure bookings, three in total, have already been contacted and either have already collected their full refund or will be collecting full refunds.
"It's unfortunate to see Lilly's closing but many pubs are facing challenges nowadays due to high costs. Energy costs are a concern, but also insurance is a major factor especially where there's a nightclub," he said.
The pub previously traded as Egan's up to 2014 before reopening for a short time as The Blue Door where Mr Lillis, a Laois and Portlaoise GAA player, co-operated the Manhatten Mixer for a time.
Mr Lillis returned to the Portlaoise premises in 2018 when he went into Alan Clancy from the NolaClan pub group to open the business as Lily's. Former Dublin footballer Bernard Brogan also had an involvement.
The pub enjoyed big success in its early days of operations.
