A Portlaoise mother in a family with autism is being joined by her sisters and friends in the 2024 Vhi Womens Mini Marathon in Dublin, all raising money for Laois Autism supports.

The money raised by the super six women will be split between Laois Offaly Families for Autism (LOFFA) and CBS Portlaoise's Solas ASD class.

Orlaith O'Reilly and her husband Aidan have three boys: Ruairi, Oran, and Sean.

"The significance of LOFFA in our lives cannot be overstated. Both Ruairi and Sean, as well as our entire family, have received invaluable support from LOFFA for the past 15 years.

"Ruairi attends St. Francis School in Portlaoise, while Sean is enrolled in CSB Portlaoise. LOFFA's unwavering assistance extends to subsidizing the therapies that are integral to our sons' well-being. Additionally, their guidance in navigating the complexities of paperwork and appeals has been a lifeline, especially amidst our busy daily lives.

"Operating entirely on a non-profit basis, LOFFA's committee comprises dedicated parents of children with autism, affectionately known as 'Super Mums and Dads and Guardians.'

"Every contribution made to LOFFA directly supports families like ours, ensuring that every penny is channeled towards making a tangible difference in their lives," Orlaith said.

St Mary's CBS secondary school in Portlaoise is also a focus for her fundraiser.

"In addition to supporting LOFFA, we are also like to rise funds for the Solas Class at CBS, a relatively new initiative that holds great importance for Sean's educational journey," she said.

Joining her in the mini marathon are her two sisters, Zita Kelly and Olivia Graham, alongside her friends Tammie and Val Veldhoven and Deirdre Kennedy.

"The backing of my sisters, friends, and the wider community serves as a profound source of encouragement. Knowing that we have their unwavering support underscores the significance of our efforts, not only for our family but for all families affiliated with LOFFA.

They are eagerly preparing for the uplifting 10km event on June Bank Holiday Sunday, June 2.
"Our hearts are brimming with excitement. It's a beautiful experience to witness women from all walks of life uniting for various charities, pooling our efforts to create a meaningful impact. We are so excited, as it promises not only to be fulfilling but also incredibly enjoyable.

"Your generosity in supporting these causes would mean the world to us. Every contribution, no matter the size, holds the power to transform lives and make a lasting impact.

"We are grateful for the support we've received thus far and humbly ask for your continued support as we strive to create positive change within our community. Thank you for considering our cause and for being an essential part of our journey towards making a difference," Orlaith said.
