Issue over land access causing road floods near Portlaoise

Fine Gael councillor seeks drainage works by Laois Council Council
An issue over accessing land is preventing road drainage works in rural Portlaoise.
Laois County Council intends to resurface the roads in Clonkeen, but Fine Gael Cllr Willie Aird said there is "no point" unless they install new drains first, to clear surface rainwater off the road.
"When you go over the railway bridge, new pipes were left on the side of the road but it never happened," he said.
"There was an issue with access to land. It is being addressed," the area engineer Wes Wilkinson told him.
"You can't stop the flow of water, whoever you are," replied Cllr Aird.
He tabled a motion on it to the May meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, saying it affects four different locations.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald seconded.
"We know it's there. The money is provided, it's just about getting access now," she said.
