Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley
Portlaoise Sinn Féin councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley has been appointed to an EU committee for local representatives.
At Cabinet on Tuesday, Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien received government approval for the nomination of Ireland’s representatives for the EU Committee of the Regions for its next five-year term to run from next January.
The Committee of the Regions is primarily a consultative and advisory body representing local and regional government at EU level and nominees must be elected representatives of regional or local bodies.
Under this year's elections, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael each have three full members and two alternates, independents have one full member and three alternates and Labour one full member.
Sinn Féin has one full member and one alternate and a government spokesperson confirmed that Ireland's nominees include Cllr Dwane Stanley.
On Monday Cllr Dwane Stanley spoke to Leinster Express/Laois Live for the first time since since her husband, Deputy Brian Stanley's resignation from the party and the subsequent controversy that it caused.
"It is a difficult time but we will get through it - we are getting huge support from many people in the community. The amount of people that have contacted us is phenomenal. At the end of the day, they are the people who put me in my job and I am very grateful to them for their support," she said.
She was asked about whether she would be remaining in the party.
"I'm not commenting on that at the moment I don't have any announcement to make. If I do it will be the local press that I will be contacting straight away," she said.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of Laois County Council on Monday, October 21, Cllr Dwane Stanley said she "definitely" would not be making a bid to win a Dáil seat.
Cllr Dwane Stanley has been a councillor since 2011 when she was co-opted onto Laois County Council after her husband was elected as a TD. She was elected to represent Portlaoise on Laois County Council at three subsequent local elections.
