'A significant milestone' - Portlaoise IT becomes first solar powered education centre in Ireland
Portlaoise Institute is proud to announce the successful installation of a state-of-the-art solar panel system at its Further Education campus on the Mountrath Road, Portlaoise.
This forward-thinking initiative marks a significant step in the Institute’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

The newly installed solar panels are expected to generate a substantial portion of the energy required to power the campus, providing a clean and renewable energy source. This development places Portlaoise Institute at the forefront of environmental innovation within the education sector.
Principal Keith McClearn expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "To the best of my knowledge, we are the first Further Education centre in Ireland to be powered by solar energy.
"This is a significant milestone for Portlaoise Institute, showcasing our dedication to sustainability and the environment.
"This innovative project would not have been possible without the support of Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) and collaborative efforts of Tony Dalton (LOETB Director of FET), Michelle Shanahan (LOETB FET Manager) and Liam Dunne (LOETB Buildings Officer)."
