Local non-profit organisation Friends of Portlaoise Hospital have donated essential kitchen supplies to the Transitional Care Unit in Abbeyleix hospital.
The 11-bed Transitional Care Unit was opened at Abbeyleix hospital in late 2023, which helps people transitioning from hospital care and intensive post-acute care, before they return home.
Donated items included tea sets, toasters, a microwave and cooking equipment, all chosen to help patients regain their independence during their stay at the unit.

"We are proud to support the Transitional Care Unit in Abbeyleix," said Áine Reams, Treasurer of Friends of Portlaoise Hospital.
"This fantastic service is an invaluable asset to our region, offering a much-needed space for healing and transition. We hope that these items will bring a touch of home and comfort to the patients, making their journey back to everyday life a little easier."
"The Transitional Care Unit in Abbeyleix plays a vital role in our community, providing a supportive environment for patients who are no longer in need of acute hospital care but require additional time and resources to prepare for a return to everyday life. It bridges the gap between hospital and home, promoting recovery and independence," Ms Reams said.
"This donation would not have been possible without the steadfast support of the local community. The Friends of Portlaoise Hospital wish to express heartfelt thanks to the public for their continuous generosity.
"Your support is the foundation of everything we do," she said.
"Without your contributions, we would not be able to provide assistance to essential services like the Transitional Care Unit. This is truly a community effort, and we are very grateful," the treasurer finished.
Friends of Portlaoise Hospital was originally founded April 1991, with the main aim of providing Portlaoise hospital with much needed supplies.
The group were recently announced as beneficiaries of the 2025 Road to Recovery - Van, Jeep & 4x4 Road Run.
