A new housing estate of 39 homes is about to start in Laois, but a neighbour wants action to fix a flooding issue first.

Curragh na Móna will be built on the Abbeyleix Road in Portlaoise, by the Respond housing agency.

It will house tenants on Laois County Council's social housing list, with work to start by the end of March.

On behalf of a concerned resident, Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley tabled a motion to a recent meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

She asks that "this council ensure that the issue of drainage and surface water run-off is adequately catered for prior to the start of construction on site".

"The house nearest to the site is concerned with surface water. The council dug a drain but when the rain is heavy, the drain gets full overnight. Water is actually trickling onto the road.

"We met the developer and he has given assurances that when the development is done, it will be piped correctly to the drain," Cllr Dwane Stanley said. 

In a written reply to her motion, senior engineer Trevor Hennessy said that works will start on site in quarter one of 2025 (January to March).

"Enabling works including surface water diversion works will be one of the first items to be addressed on site. These works should address the current surface water drainage issues," Mr Hennessy said.

Curragh na Móna will have 15 apartments and 24 houses. It will also have a community facility.
