Portlaoise Garda Station
Construction work on the new garda station in Portlaoise should be substantially complete by March 2027.
That’s according to Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works(OPW), Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, who said gardaí should be moving back into the Laois Offaly Garda Divisional Headquarters in Portlaoise in the second quarter of 2027.
Deputy Seán Fleming had asked the Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform for a progress report on the new Laois-Offaly Garda Divisional Headquarters in Portlaoise last Thursday, April 3.
“Under the new operating model, Portlaoise Garda Station will be the Division HQ of Laois-Offaly, serving a population of approx 200,000 citizens,” Minister Moran.
“The refurbishment of the existing Garda station, as the Deputy will be aware, is located within a historic Fort. The project includes the construction of a significantly larger part two/part three storey extension at the rear of the station and the construction of new three-storey over basement building.
Previously Enabling Works, which included conservation works to the historic wall and demolition works to modern structures attached to the historic wall, have been completed. These works have helped de-risk the delivery of the main project,” he explained.
Minister Moran said the contractor began working on the garda station in November of 2024.
“The expected construction period is 28 months with substantial completion expected in Q1 2027 and the end–user installation, furniture, IT and occupation expected in Q2 2027. The programme is currently on track to meet these deadlines. The OPW continues to work closely with the design team, main contractor and reserved specialists to ensure the successful delivery of this project,” he said.

“To ensure continuity of policing within the town and region, AGS are operating a public office to the front of the former station, providing policing activity from the former Department of Agriculture Office at Grattan Business Centre and using upgraded custody facilities at Abbeyleix Garda Station,” he concluded.
