Big plans are in the process of being lodged with Laois County Council to build more new homes on the county town.

Planners at County Hall have been notified of plans for 74 houses and apartments on a site off the the N80 Mountmellick Road in Portlaoise.

Carlow Kilkenny development company Hebron Mooncoin has announced that it will shortly lodge an application to Laois County Council for a housing development.

They will seek permission to build a total of 74 homes, a mix of duplexes, apartments and houses in Portlaoise. This includes 24 'duplex' apartments in three storey buildings.

A total of 22 with one and two-bedroom apartments are planned while 28 two and three-bedroom two-storey houses are also envisaged.

The development will include 128 car parking spaces and six visitor parking spaces, and "private amenity space".

The site location is unclear as yet because only a notice of intention to seek planning has been published, in a local newspaper.

The Mountmellick Road area of Portlaoise is one of the most heavily developed parts of town when it comes to housing. However, it has been criticised for its lack of updated road infrastructure.
