Midlands Park Hotel was proud to collaborate with the Transition Year students of St. Mary’s CBS, Portlaoise, on a creative and environmentally conscious project aimed at enhancing the hotel’s exterior while supporting local biodiversity.
The students demonstrated great commitment and enthusiasm as they handcrafted a series of bird boxes and fairy doors, which were designed to be both decorative and purposeful. These charming additions will be installed around the exterior grounds of the hotel, providing shelter and nesting spaces for local birdlife, and contributing to the biodiversity of the area.
Last week, Midlands Park Hotel had the pleasure of welcoming the students to the hotel, where they were formally presented with the finished bird boxes and acknowledged for their hard work and creativity.

George Leahy, General Manager of Midlands Park Hotel, expressed his delight in working alongside the local school, saying:
“It has been a real pleasure to reconnect with St. Mary’s CBS on this wonderful initiative. As a former parent of the school, it holds a very special place in my heart. To be able to support and collaborate with the students and their teachers on a project that benefits both our local community and environment has been a true joy.”
This initiative also aligns with the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. The bird boxes not only enhance the visual appeal of the hotel grounds but also encourage the presence of native wildlife, reinforcing the hotel’s efforts to promote biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
Special thanks go to Miss Stephanie Redmond (Irish Teacher) and Mr. Enda Mooney (Woodwork Teacher), whose passion, guidance, and support were instrumental in making this collaboration a success. Their dedication to their students and to the project ensured its meaningful and lasting impact.
Midlands Park Hotel looks forward to building on this partnership in future and continuing to support educational and environmental initiatives within the local community.
