Pedestrians are finding it hard to walk into a rural Laois cemetery but Laois County Council says Ballinakill cemetery is not on their list for 2025.

Cllr Barry Walsh tabled a motion to the June meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking them to tarmac a rough gravel area.

“A few locals were on to me to surface it for parking. They find it hard to differentiate from the road. It’s hard for people not great on their feet,” he said.

The council do say that if money is left over from the district’s burial grounds improvement budget at the end of 2025, work can be done. If not it will be done in 2026.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly seconded.

"I agree. If it's not done it will be next year, that's good news," he said.
