Gardaí have issued advice to motorists ahead of this weekend's All Ireland Hurling Final.

Over 82,000 fans will descend upon the capital for the much anticipated match between Tipperary and Cork on Sunday.

Fans from both counties who opt to travel by car will pass through Portlaoise Plaze toll bridge on the M7.

Tipperary Gardaí have advised fans that the toll plaza on the M7 in Portlaoise is 'likely to be one of the main bottlenecks' for traffic congestion.

Gardaí and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have issued advice to motorists ahead of the match.

"The All-Ireland Hurling Final this Sunday will significantly increase traffic into Dublin on the M8 and N/M7, particularly from 10:00am onwards. Road users on these routes, including the M50 should plan there journeys in advance," TII have said.

"Consider Public Transport if travelling to the match including using Luas Park & Ride.

"Toll Plaza users please consider using electronic tags (e.g., eFlow) or card payment where available to speed up your journey.

"Please have the correct change ready if paying with cash. Plan your journey in advance and allow plenty of extra time to avoid delays with fans who are travelling by car passing through Portlaoise," they said.

Gardaí took to social media to issue advice for motorists.

"Are you due to drive along the M7 this Sunday? We're expecting a large volume of match traffic travelling from Cork GAA and Tipperary GAA to Croke Park for the GAA All-Ireland," they said.

"Please plan your journey, allow plenty of time to get to your destination, and expect delays."

Sinn Féin Cork based TD Thomas Gould has recently called for the gates at the Portlaoise toll bridge to remain open on Sunday, 'to allow for fans to travel to Croke Park safely'.

Deputy Gould said Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) assured him that toll bridges would 'not pose an issue' during the recent semi-final between Cork and Dublin. However, there were traffic jams throughout the day.

“I wrote to TII last week and I was assured that the tolls would not be an issue for the semi-final,” the TD said.

“This wasn’t the case and there were huge traffic jams all day Saturday with people trying to attend the match.

“This is dangerous on motorways, and it cannot be allowed to happen again.”
