The largest residential estate in Laois is about to get its first residents association, despite being decades old.

Kilminchy estate on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise has some 800 homes built across multiple sections by different developers, mostly during the Celtic Tiger.

The estate with a population greater than many of Laois' small towns, also has a nursing home, retirement village, pub, restaurants and shops, amenity lake walk and more recently public bus stops, though it is still lacks a playground.

Kilminchy continues to grow with more houses under construction as Portlaoise expands further.

Resident John Cowhig told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that the new association will be an opportunity for all its residents to come together.

"The residents are invited to take the opportunity to be actively involved in shaping Kilminchy’s future, and represent their own road and the wider neighbourhood. Come along, share your views and help make Kilminchy a better place to live," he said.

All Kilminchy residents including renters are being invited to form the residents association committee, with a meeting coming up just before Halloween.

The meeting will take place in Portlaoise Parish Centre, in the grounds of St Peter and Paul’s Church, on Tuesday, October 28 at 7.30pm.

While Kilminchy has a management company, it has never had a residents association before.

The Kilminchy Owners' Management CLG company has over 740 residential homeowners in Kilminchy as members, but it only has responsibility for the maintenance of the grassed common areas, the lakes, tennis courts, and bowling green.
