Works have been approved for the installation of new road safety measures at a nursing home in Portlaoise.

At the December meeting of the Portlaoise MD, Councillor Paddy Buggy raised a motion to call upon Laois County Council to erect a 'Stop' sign and put down road markings at the junction located beside St Brigid's Hospital in Shaen, Portlaoise.

St. Brigid's Hospital in Shaen provides residential care for over 20 residents with continuing care, dementia, palliative care and respite needs.

The call was made by Cllr Buggy to improve the safety of the junction on the L-21335 which sees much traffic from staff and visitors of the hospital.

Laois County Council said the Portlaoise MD Office has examined the area at the exit from St Brigid's Nursing Home onto the public road and they intend to make arrangements for a 'Stop' sign to be erected and road makings to be placed on the exit road.

Cllr Buggy welcomed the news, saying: "This will add to the safety of both the staff and visitors of the clients at Shaen hospital in a big way."
