Laois TD issues update on government talks on fuel crisis

Laois TD Willie Aird has issued a statement on the fuel crisis.

Laois Fine Gael TD Willie Aird said discussions with Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon on rising fuel costs were “full and frank”, with further supports now being finalised.

The meeting followed a series of engagements on the issue, as concerns continue to mount over the impact of fuel prices on households and key sectors of the economy.

In a statement to Leinster Express/Laois Live Deputy Aird said he has reiterated his concerns, warning of the growing strain on farmers, contractors, hauliers, commuters and frontline staff.

“As someone who farms actively, I am acutely aware of the day-to-day pressures created by escalating fuel prices,” he said.

“In recent weeks I have spoken with commuters, farmers, healthcare workers, hauliers, couriers and agricultural contractors, all of whom have seen substantial increases in their operational costs.”

Deputy Aird said he raised the issue in the Dáil on 5 April and said he has since met with protestors in Portlaoise to hear their concerns directly. He said these views have been relayed to Government colleagues.

On Friday, Minister Heydon and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, along with a number of Ministers of State, met with representative bodies from the agricultural, food, transport and freight sectors. Groups in attendance included the ICMSA, INHFA, IFA, Macra, Ibec, ICOS, IGG, FCI, IGFA, IRHA, Freight Transport Association, PAC Ireland, and the Coach Tourism and Transport Council.

The government said in a statement on Friday that the meeting focused on the challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on supply chains and fuel prices.

According to Deputy Aird, ministers indicated that an enhanced support package, in addition to the €250 million already allocated, is being finalised to help affected sectors. These measures are expected to be sector-specific.

He also said the Government is engaging with the European Commission regarding VAT rates applied to fuel, and that further meetings with stakeholders are planned over the coming days.

Deputy Aird said he would continue to press for action.

“I will continue to make strong representations to my government colleagues to ensure that the concerns of my constituents are heard,” he said. “I will keep advocating for financial measures to be enacted without delay to support those most affected.”
