Minister for Health Simon Harris, and the CEO of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group Dr Susan O'Reilly, are to be formally invited to Laois to discuss the future of Portlaoise hospital.

This morning at the December meeting of Laois County Council, two councillors have similar motions requesting the Health Minister to come to Laois to address them.

Cllr Willie Aird has a motion "that Laois County Council invite Mr Simon Harris TD Minister for Health and Dr Susan O'Reilly to attend the January meeting of Laois County Council to discuss the future of the Midlands Regional Hospital at Portlaoise".

Cllr Tom Mulhall's motion is for the council to invite the Health Minister "to meet with the public representatives in Laois as promised at his meeting in January 2017 in relation to the future of Portlaoise Hospital".

It is almost a year since Minister Harris visited Portlaoise hospital and then met councillors, Minister Charlie Flanagan and TDs Sean Fleming and Brian Stanley in a nearby hotel.

At that time he said that no decision had been made on Portlaoise hospital.
